North Shore Kennels is owned and operated by Dana and Veronica Mercer. Both have had dogs their entire lives. Veronica grew up in a home with Labrador Retrievers. Dana trained his first Doberman Pinscher "Tara" to earn his first obedience title at the age of 14.
Some years later, after becoming an avid waterfowl hunter, Dana discovered the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. After 2 years of research, he finally purchased his first Chesapeake from Gary Irish. An 18 month old male - CH Irish's Royal Canadian Cub - call name "Irish".
Although at that time, Veronica had never heard of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever; she quickly grew to love the dog named "Irish". With Irish, they had their first experiences in hunt tests and the conformation ring, although he was truly "in his element" only in the duck blind.
Within a couple of years Dana and Veronica were married. As soon as they were able to acquire a house with a bit more property in a rural area, North Shore Kennels was officially established. The kennel prefix that has been used on dogs' names has gone through many transformations. You will find dogs of their breeding registered with prefixes "The North Shore", "Norshore" and some with no prefix at all. In 2004 North Shore Kennels became "Mercer Reg'd" and dogs from this kennel now carry "Mercer" as a prefix or suffix in their name.
North Shore Kennels has produced many show champions, numerous excellent hunting companions and faithful family pets. Dana and Veronica are currently actively involved in the show ring and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club of Canada.

"Irish" is long since passed but his legacy lives on in the dogs raised here today.
